Hey! My name is Liz Aponte. I started playing drums at 13 after I started listening to bands like No Doubt, Thrice, and Strung Out. Those bands started the musical journey for me that would turn into my mission.
HOLLYWOOD CIRCUIT AT 16
By the time I was 16, I had played iconic Hollywood venues like The Roxy, The Whiskey, The Knitting Factory and The Ventura Theater. I couldn’t drive yet, so we always had to ok the shows with our parents so they could take us and our gear - pretty punk rock, right?!
WARPED TOUR & DRUM MAKING
At 19, I toured the country through the Vans Warped Tour and any show that we could play on days off before and after the tour. The most interesting spot we played? A pear field in Ukiah, California. Not many people can say that! It was around this time that I started making custom drums through my company Respira Collective. Can you tell I really like drums?!
Once I got out on the road, I realized that being a female drummer is not easy. Often, I was met with doubt, weird comments and disrespect. Some people couldn’t seem to believe that I could play in a rock band and chase my dreams. It was frustrating.
HELPING FEMALE DRUMMERS CRUSH IT
Thankfully, for every person like this I met, I also met 10 people that were the exact opposite - encouraging, warm and found inspiration in what I was doing. I started meeting other female musicians that either went through the same thing or just gave up.
After touring and studio time, I ended up finding a new passion in drumming - teaching. I realized that I know exactly what it’s like to hit roadblocks in your drumming and feel like you’re facing an uphill battle, whether it’s internally or externally, and that other people felt the same way.
